Wat Leng Nai Yi 2, also known as Wat Boromracha Kanchanapisek Anusorn, is an impressive Chinese temple and well worth a visit. The temple is located in Bangbua Thong district in Nonthaburi just north of Bangkok. It took over ten years to build, and was constructed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the King’s reign.

The temple was designed by Thai and Chinese architects and most of the construction material was handmade in China including the engraved granite columns, brass Buddha statues and carved wood murals. The temple is built true to the Mahayana Buddhist tradition with its traditional Chinese architectural designs and Feng Shui discipline.

Never Ending Summer

avarcas menorquinas bangkok
Never ending summer opened in December last year in Thonburi. It is located in The Jam Factory a multi-venue compound that includes a gallery, book shop and architecture studio. We finally made it and visited this new restaurant last Sunday.
The restaurant is in an old warehouse and the décor resembles it: flecked paint, some rustic accents and art from some local photographers. The open kitchen allow the guests to enjoy all the action while your food is being prepared.

The menu is supposed to be family recipes, those dishes that the owners used to enjoy as children. We enjoyed the food and the ambience, though we went for lunch and it was a bit hot, as the transparent roof tends to heat up in the sun.

Kanchanburi, the past and the present

avarcas menorquinas pons bangkok thailand
We have been to Kanchanburi a number of times and have visited most of the museums and have ridden the train so this time we wanted to do something different. Nevertheless, we paid a visit to the bridge, as I think it is a must even if you have been there a thousand times. We just went in the morning had a walk around and then headed outside town. avarcas menorquinas pons thailand
Lawa Cave
On our way to Lawa Cave we stopped for lunch at a restaurant by the road, we had some fish and vegetables and they were delicious.
avarcas menorquinas pons thailand bangkok
Lawa Cave is the biggest cave in Kanchanaburi, it is on the side of Khwae Noi River, around 75km from Kanchanaburi City. It is not difficult to find but have to pay attention to the signs; we missed it and drove nearly 20 km too far.
It is a spacious cave full of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. The lighting is hidden but sufficient and it makes it a real cave experience. I would suggest to take a torch and, even, to hire one of the kids that offer their services as a guide. It is not that you can get lost but there are not so many visitors, we only met a couple on our way in and a small group in our way out, so it was a bit spooky, though I have to confess that I am a bit of a chicken. Having some extra company will help, plus the kids will explain about the cave and point out interesting spots.

Pakprak Road

We also visited Pakprak Road, a 170 year old community full of history. Walking down this street you will be appreciate the beautiful old architecture. All the historical buildings have a yellow sign explaining their history. There are two beautiful cafés on this road, we made our stop at Sitthisang Coffee (open daily 8am-6pm, 034-514-514), it is housed in a colonial-style building with retro decoration. The cheesecake is to die for. Hua Hong Coffee(open daily 8am-6pm, 034-511-577) is another beautiful café decorated in Chinese style.

Dheva Mantra Resort and Spa
We stayed at the Dheva Mantra. The Dheva Mnatra is a colonial style resort set by the river in a lush tropical garden. The grounds are big and have a lot of paths, we even saw some people jogging in the mornings. It also has a beautiful lagoon-like infinity pool and a small playground for kids.It is a very peaceful and relaxing setting with lovely views. The rooms are nice and spacious and the staff is very friendly and attentive.

We had dinner both nights at the Rice Barge restaurant right on the river, good food and nice atmosphere.

Talad Bang Nam Pheung

spanish leather shoes sandals
This was our second time at Talad Nam Bang Nam Pheung as the first time I run out of battery and could only take three photos (note to myself: make sure your battery is full). This market is located just south of central Bangkok in an area known as Phra Pradaeng, Bangkok’s green lung, it is a surprisingly untouched area still covered with vegetation despite being so close to the city.
It is only 20 minutes from our house by Express Way so it makes it easy, even to make a last minute decision. There are different entrances to the market depending on which direction you arrive.

We arrived early in the morning and had breakfast, Thai coffee and chocolate cake for me, and noodles for the rest of the family. The chocolate cake sold at Little Ant is wonderful and I had been looking forward to it, not too sweet and only 35 baht a piece. We sat on the floor in the small tables provided looking at people walking by, a nice way of starting the day.

The market is surrounded by lush forest and tropical greenery. At some points the paths are elevated above water, it has a wonderful atmosphere that makes you feel that you are far away from the big city. This market is mainly visited by Thais, though I noticed some foreign tourists this time.

You can find all kind of things to buy: becoming more popular are the cloths made of Thai traditional fabric (I did not see these last time). And what cannot miss is the food. There is so much food available. Gac fruit, which I had never seen before, is very popular at Bang Nam Pheung. Gac fruit juice is also for sale.spanish avarcas menorquinas
For me, one of the highlights of the market is the old traditional wooden house where you can get traditional sweets and drinks. It is a beautiful place, nicely decorated surrounded by a garden, you can take a lot of interesting photos and sit and relax looking at people go by.
Other things you can do is have your fortune told, kids can do some painting or listen to the traditional folk music that some spontaneous artist provide at the back of the market surrounded by trees. spanish leather menorquins
And after wandering around it was time for lunch. We went back to where we had had breakfast in the morning and had some papaya salad, grilled chicken and satay, everything delicious and I have to say I was impressed with the service.
There is also small restaurant with a kind of a patio in the middle if you prefer not to sit on the floor.

We had a lot of fun, all of it will make a very enjoyable day for the whole family!

Turtle temple: a relaxing morning in the old town

Spanish leather shoes camper
We went to the turtle temple a quite Sunday morning to feed the turtles. Wat Prayoon, or Wat Rua Lek, the “turtle temple” lays quietly on the western bank of the Chao Praya. It was built during King Rama III’s reign.Spanish leather shoes menorquinas avarcas
The small gardens are beautifully landscaped with a pond that flows around a little hill housing spirit houses. The water is not very clear but the whole compound has a very relaxing atmosphere. Many turtles and large fish swim around; appearing at the surface when they feel that food might be on offer. There is a little kiosk where you can buy food for the turtles and the fish. Fish balls are on the menu, a long pointed stick is also provided, so just attach the fish balls to the stick, stand by the edge and before you know it’ll be gone.Spanish leather shoes avarcas menorquinas
The temple is on the Thonburi side, at the foot of Memorial Bridge (Saphan Phut) on the edge of the old Portuguese community (Kuthi Jeen). This was the area designated to Portuguese merchants and government officials during the Early Rattanakosin Period. A stroll around this Portuguese community makes for an interesting afternoon.
How to get there: The easiest way to get there take the river taxi and get off at Tha Saphan Pier, cross over the river on Memorial bridge and you will see the temple about 100 metres on the right hand side.

A gem in Chinatown: Yaowarat Heritage Center

spanish leather shoes bangkok
The Yaowarat Heritage Centre is one of our favorite museums in Bangkok. It tells the history of the early Chinese immigrants who came to Bangkok, how they integrated into Thai society and how Bangkok Chinatown grew to be what it is today.
It is located on the second floor of the famous Wat Traimit Witthayaram.
First, visitors are introduced to history with a 3D video (in Thai or English), the story is set in a typical Chinese home and a grandfather tells his grandson about life in Yaowarat, how coolies lived in Thailand and all the opportunities their new homeland offered. The grandfather proudly recalls the Thai King’s visits to Chinatown.

Next the early history room tells the story of the migration story of the Chinese who settled in Bangkok and Thonburi.

Visitors can experience the real journey of these immigrants as they go through a Chinese junk with all the good that were taken to Thailand from the motherland. The use audio and visual effects make it a very realistic experience. You really think that are in a real boat during a storm. After you exit the boat, you are in the harbor where there is a lot of activity and the vessels are unloaded.
Later on visitors can walk through narrow streets full of little shops and vendors.

The next section features scaled models of scenes of life in the old days as well as a scaled model of Chinatown Bangkok. spanish leather shoes vintage
The hall of fame is dedicated to famous personalities who were and are an inspiration for the new generation.
The last hall presents Yaowarat nowdays. The present with all the activity and all the possibilities that China Town offers to the visitor.
The Yaowarat Heritage Centre is really worth a visit.
Yaowarat Chinatown Heritage Center is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 08:00-17:00. Admission is free for children up to eight-years-of age and 100B for others.

Best coffee outside town: Klong Suan 100 years market

spanish leather sandal vintage
Klong Suan 100 Year Market is set on one side of the Prawet Burirom klong and dates back to the reign of King Rama V.
Klong Suan 100 Year market is more than just a market, it is really a living museum.
spanish leather shoes fitflops
The market has many different shops, which are getting rare these days. We have visited the market several times and our favorite place is Mr. Lee’s coffee shop. His Oliang (Thai iced coffee) is the best I have ever tried. Unfortunately, in our last trip, we were sad to know that he had passed away some months ago. Mr. Lee was over 80 years old and has been featured in several local media; he was a legend in the market. The coffee shop is now run by one of his sons.
There is also a barber shop run by khun Dumrong who is in his seventies and has worked all his life in the barber shop founded by his father.
A small museum displays all kinds of products sold in the past. It’s housed in what was once the residence of one of the market’s founders.

And a Thai market would not be a market without food. There are so many shops were you can eat and contemplate the klong life. Last time we were there was only some life Thai traditional music to enjoy while having lunch.
Klong Suan market is an important community center, a blend of different cultures where the Thai, Chinese and Muslim people live in harmony helping each other.
Most of the visitors are Thai and you can experience the real atmosphere of a traditional market, it still retains the charm of the old days. All in all is a nice day trip to scape the big city and enjoy the cool weather while it lasts.

A resort, a zoo, a garden…

Spanish leather shoes camper
We landed in this hotel by pure luck. We decided that we wanted to spend the weekend around Kaho Yai in the last moment, so when we tried to book a hotel, we realized that everything was fully booked, we were sent Dasada resort as an alternative to the one we wanted. We checked out the website and it looked really good, though you never know, as sometimes the website photos are wonderful and when you arrive is quite a different story, and in this case, it was in a way also like that but we were actually in for a very pleasant surprise. The resort is actually better than what it looks in the photos!!
fitflops spanish leather shoes
Dasada is located southern from Kaho Yai in Prachinburi province. The stunning grounds and gardens are huge and immaculate kept, the rooms are decorated with a minimalistic and beautiful style with a lot of attention to detail, and the amenities are high end. The pool is incredible, big, and warm and with salt water, illuminated with pretty little lights at night.
There is also a spacious aviary, which is very well looked after and has a lovely selection of birds. The friendly keepers will guide you around and let you hold the birds and feed them. There is also a deer park and there are rabbits, chickens, goats and sheep that will follow you around.

We were also so lucky to be there when they are having the flower exhibition. This exhibition will be opened till the first weekend of March and it is worth a visit. It features a great variety of flowers and beautiful flower arrangements. Next to the exhibition hall there is a beautiful café, with glass walls looking into the wonderful gardens. They have a great variety of cakes and ice creams.Fitflops spanish leather shoes vintage
There are two restaurants. An Italian/ international, that is quite romantic at night and where breakfast is also served. The menu is not very extensive but the food is delicious and very well presented. The second restaurant serves Thai delicious food. Both restaurants have inside and outside areas overlooking the amazing grounds.

We will be back and recommend Dasada resort for families and couples alike.

Jim Thompson Farm

fitflops shoes portada

Jim Thompson farm is another good opportunity to get away from the city in the cool season, so we decided to make it out of town and enjoy some nature. The farm opens only for a short period of time every year. Last Saturday was the first day for this season, it will remain open till the 12th of January.
The farm is located in Pak Thong Chai district round 2.5 to 3 hours from Bangkok. We left around 7 in the morning and got there around 10. It was amazing how many how many cars there were in the car park, though inside it is so big, that we never had the feeling that it was crowded. We got our tickets (actually you can get it in advance for a discount in Bangkok at JimThompson shops but we did not have the time to pick them up), then we hopped into the “watermelon tram” and headed to the first stop. We drove slowly through the beautiful flower fields; it was an explosion of pink, red and white. In the first stop we enjoyed the first big photo shoot attraction: the giant pumpkin where a huge variety of pumpkins is on display, I never thought there were so many kinds!
healthy shoes bangkok mezcla
There is also a huge silk cocoon where you can take nice photos. We walked to the second stop, the Thai village through a green tunnel and then through some rice paddies. It as a nice stroll as the weather was so nice and cool.
We got to the Thai village just on time for lunch. There are two options for lunch, a Thai air conditioned restaurant or an outside area where simple food is on offer.
At the Thai village you can see the Thai traditional life style, learn about the lifecycle of the silkworm and how the littleworms make this natural fiber, and also see the processes of silk reeling, yarn dyeing, silk weaving and fabric printing.
vintage shoes bangkok silk
There is also traditional music, Luk Thung. It is a great atmosphere and you can learn so many things. There is something for every member of the family.
The next stop took us to a traditional pavilion, or library, a beautiful wood building by the river that can be accessed by a bridge.
At the end of the tour you can enjoy some shopping for Thai silk products and also pick your vegetables to take back home.
Getting there: From Bangkok, take Highway Highway No.1 to Saraburi. At the Saraburi junction overpass, turn right towards Nakhon Rachasima onto Highway No.2, then turn onto the Si Khiew junction overpass to connect with Highway No.24 , make a U turn about 1.5 kilometers after the seeing the Tor Mai Restaurant. After the U turn, remain on Highway No.24 and turn left onto District Road 1021 to the Jim Thompson Farm. The total distance is 255 kilometers, approximately 3 hours.

Sunflower fields forever…

It is that time of the year when the sunflowers are in full bloom, so last weekend we headed to Lopburi to enjoy a day away from the city.

Sunflower fields are at its best from November until February, though, if you are lucky, you might be able to see some still in March. The most popular ones are in Tambon Chong Sarika, Phatthana Nikom District,Lopburi. The beautiful fields filled with bright yellow sunflowers, set against the surrounding hills are quite striking. Originally, these were commercial crops raised for producing seeds and oil, yet in the recent years they have also become a tourist attraction, a nice excuse to leave the hustle and bustle of Bangkok for the day.

I guess some people have seen opportunity in this and a small fee is charged to go into the fields, 10 baht per person (children were free, just ask politely). Around some of the fields you can find vendors selling local products like honey or sunflower seeds (we bought some that brought back some childhood memories) or other souvenirs and food. In some of them you could also ride an elephant or a tractor.
Are sunflowers on their own worth a visit? We would say yes, as they are our favorite flower, in addition you can visit Lopburi, the “monkey city” or even Ayutthaya on your way back to Bangkok.
We enjoyed lunch at a small shop just opposite the “Monkey Temple” in Lopburi and watched the monkeys jump up and down and then drove back through Ayutthaya, spent the afternoon strolling around the old city and had dinner by the river before heading back home. It was a nice and relaxing trip; especially as the weather has been so fresh, enjoy the cool weather while it lasts!

Getting There
To travel from Bangkok, drive along the Lop Buri-Saraburi Road for approximately 30 kilometers, then turn left into Highway No. 21 and proceed for another 15 kilometers. Traveling from Lop Buri town center, the sunflower field is located approximately 45 kilometers from the town.
