The Yaowarat Heritage Centre is one of our favorite museums in Bangkok. It tells the history of the early Chinese immigrants who came to Bangkok, how they integrated into Thai society and how Bangkok Chinatown grew to be what it is today.
It is located on the second floor of the famous Wat Traimit Witthayaram.
First, visitors are introduced to history with a 3D video (in Thai or English), the story is set in a typical Chinese home and a grandfather tells his grandson about life in Yaowarat, how coolies lived in Thailand and all the opportunities their new homeland offered. The grandfather proudly recalls the Thai King’s visits to Chinatown.

Next the early history room tells the story of the migration story of the Chinese who settled in Bangkok and Thonburi.

Visitors can experience the real journey of these immigrants as they go through a Chinese junk with all the good that were taken to Thailand from the motherland. The use audio and visual effects make it a very realistic experience. You really think that are in a real boat during a storm. After you exit the boat, you are in the harbor where there is a lot of activity and the vessels are unloaded.
Later on visitors can walk through narrow streets full of little shops and vendors.
